Koh Phangan Beaches

Koh Phangan benefits from some of the most impressive beaches to be found in the Gulf of Thailand. Indeed, it remains one of the only places in Thailand where is still possible to find a stretch of unspoiled, pristine beach, where you can enjoy solitude away from the tourist masses. Although beaches form almost the entire coastline of the island, some areas are noted for their particular beauty.

Northern Beaches
Possibly the most famous beach upon the island of Koh Phangan is the intriguingly named Bottle Beach. This secluded gem is still unreachable by road, although there is a dirt track which can be navigated during dry season by motorbike. The best way to reach Bottle Beach is by long tail boat, these can be rented and used as taxis to ferry you and your companions from any major beach on the island of Koh Phangan to Bottle Beach. Another excellent beach in the North of the island is Ao Chaloklam, a wide shallow bay, which is the home port of islands local squid fishing fleet. The wide stretches of sand are fringed by excellent restaurants and bars, making this a wonderful beach for those people who enjoy quality food as well as sun and sand.

Eastern Beaches
The stars of the eastern part of the island are without a doubt Ao Thong Nai Pan Noi and Ao Thing Nai Pan Yai. Of the two, Ao Thong Nai Pan Noi is the most popular although both beaches are considered to be stunning. In recent years many excellent resorts have been constructed in this area of the island, offering luxury beach holidays to those who are looking for the very best the island has to offer.

Southern Beaches
Firm favourites with backpacker crowd are Ao Haad Rin Nai and Ao Haad Rin Nok. These are both beautifully maintained beaches, although at the time of the full moon they are almost entirely turned over to the party scene. Visitors to the southern part of Koh Phangan, who are looking for clean beaches, would do well to avoid this area for a few days after the infamous Full Moon Party, as it takes the local Thai population some time to clean the beach after this major event.

Western Beaches
In many ways the beaches along the West Coast of Koh Phangan offer the best of everything. They are easily accessed, well maintained and very clean. Additionally, in many places the coral reef which surrounds the island lays very close to shore along the eastern coast, meaning these are superb beaches from which to explore and discover the fascinating sea life, using nothing more than a snorkel and a pair of flippers.

There can be no doubt that Koh Phangan can offer a beach holiday like no other place in the world. A combination of stunning natural beauty, laid-back vibe and friendly locals make the island of Koh Phangan a very special place. If your idea of the perfect beach includes unspoiled sand, crystal blue waters and a bar constructed of bamboo, vending cheap refreshments, then Koh Phangan will not disappoint you.
