Chaloklum Beach Koh Phangan.

Ao Chaloklam can be found towards the northern end of the island and to the east of Bottle Beach. This beautiful, wide bay is home to Koh Phangan’s local squid fishing fleet. An excellent beach, very wide with clean sand, a series of bungalow resorts, restaurants and bars line the shore, making this a fantastic place to spend time whilst you are visiting Koh Phangan.

Chaloklam is one of the quieter areas of the island; a stay here is typified by lazy days in the sun, quiet evenings in a local bar, and browsing the local gift shops. There are some excellent seafood restaurants to be found in this area of Koh Phangan, and as one might expect from a squid fishing village, the squid is often the most exceptional dish on the menu.

Chaloklam is home to several dive schools, and most of the larger scuba-diving outfits on the island moor their boats in the small marina alongside the squid fishing vessels. This means that there are often bargains to be had with PADI scuba-diving courses, as the local dive schools attempt to fill their boats before departing for a days driving.

It should be noted that at certain times in the month, when the squid fishing fleet is active, the beach at Chaloklam can become a little bit smelly. The reason for this becomes obvious when we witnessed it, as the squid boats lay out large wooden frames, and begin to dry their catch in the sun. This can last several days, and if you have a delicate nose it is recommended that you do not visit the beach during these times.

Although it should be noted that is quite fascinating to watch this traditional style of squid fishing taking place. For a small fee you can climb aboard one of the squid fishing vessels and spend the night squid fishing yourself.

All in all, Chaloklam beach is one of the more interesting areas of the Koh Phangan coastline, a nice balance between restaurants and bars, excellent beach, and interesting local commerce.
