Koh Ma Beach

Koh Ma is a tiny island that sits a few hundred metres off the North Western Shore of Koh Phangan. The sea here is so shallow that it's possible to wade across from the mainland even during the seasons with the highest tides. The beaches along the edges of this small island, and fronting it from the mainland are considered to be some of the best on Koh Phangan.

Without a doubt, Koh Ma is the number one snorkelling destination on the whole island, with an incredibly healthy coral reef just off shore, and surrounding the smaller island of Koh Ma. Even the most inexperienced swimmers will be able to experience some superb snorkelling in water no more than shoulder deep. It should be noted that if you swim out around the back of the small island of Koh Ma the currents can become quite strong, if you are not a strong swimmer it is recommended that you confine your snorkelling to the sheltered bay formed between the mainland and the small island of Koh Ma.

There are several bungalow resorts, all with excellent restaurants sitting back just from the shoreline. There is also a new restaurant with seating for around 50 people right on the beach. Additionally, the local dive school runs beach diving excursions right off the beach. There are volleyball nets set up between the palm trees, and rope swings hanging from the branches of the larger trees. There are also many stone fire pits, most of which are used every evening to light the beach.

In the high season, Koh Ma can be extremely busy, this is one of the most naturally beautiful areas of Koh Phangan and almost every backpacker visiting the island has heard of this area before they arrived, meaning that if you wish to stay here you will need to book in advance. Even if you cannot find accommodation in the area, it is a simple drive from anywhere on the island, along good roads with plentiful signpost to help you locate this splendid part of Koh Phangan.
